Coast to Coast and Back or BUST!
Crossing the United States in an Electric? Can it be done?
Yes that is correct says Curtis Newman
CEO of the Genesis project. Team Genesis plans to drive
coast to coast and back in an electric bus, a luxury SUV and
a host of other electric vehicles not yet disclosed. Plans
are to leave Long Beach California in October 2012 and drive
to New York City, New York, then turn around and drive back
to Long Beach California. (Round Trip Approximately 5,556
miles)
This is the first time that anybody has tried a cross country road trip driving a full size electric bus or any other type of plug-in electric vehicle. The greatest challenge is, their may not be enough charging stations along the way. As a precaution the Genesis technical team will be traveling with a special high voltage DC to DC power plant to provide the necessary charge for any of the vehicles. Otherwise we will plug in when we get to the next city or rest area charging station. The idea is to promote and prove that plug-in electric vehicles can be a valuable part of America’s commuter and long distance highways.
Our first goal is to break the world’s record by traveling
the distance of 267 miles (one way) from Los Angeles,
California to Las Vegas Nevada at highway speeds in a real
time environment. Once in Las Vegas, Plans are to pull into
one of the casinos for a promotional campaign and let the
public experience the look and feel of cool custom extended
range electric vehicles. After an over night break to
repower, we would head back to Los Angeles, California. The
total trip is around 534 miles. The data collected will
identify vehicle performance and areas in need of a charging
station.
These are exciting times because we will be using a new type of extended range powertrain and a lithium iron phosphate battery. The combination of technologies is expected to increase the vehicles distance as much as two times the current U.S. EV distance of Tesla’s two seater sport car of 289 miles on a single charge.
According
to the Guinness World Record: The longest journey by a
(non-solar) electric vehicle without recharging the
batteries is 555.6 km (345.23 miles) and was achieved by
Tadashi Tateuchi (Japan) who drove his Mira EV from Tokyo to
Osaka, Japan, on 17 November 2009. The distance was taken
from the cars odometer, which read 0 at the start.
Editors Note: The average vehicle speed was 22.69 miles
per hour. Not fast enough for normal highway speeds.
